With its golden sand and dark blue waters, surrounded by lush vegetation, the west coast of Mexico is an ideal location for a destination wedding. In this Testimonial Tuesday post, our destination wedding specialist, Lasia, shares with us her recent adventures in Huatulco!
Before we get into Lasia’s review, here are few trip details:
From September 17th to 20th, Lasia conducted site inspection with Signature Vacations as part of an exclusive group of agent/destination wedding companies and media. The purpose of this trip was to inspect 5 of the top hotels in Huatulco, Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico.
Huatulco, Mexico
Huatulco (prononuced wha-tool-co), Oaxaca (State) (prononunced wa-ha-ca), Mexico (southwestern Mexico)
My first impressions: “I’m home.”
Final impressions: Huatulco is gorgeous and the ideal locale for couples who want a more laid back destination wedding. It will be especially suited for green Beachside Brides & Grooms for its booming and impressive eco-tourism.
This Mexican destination spot is most known for:
- The Huatulco “Green Team”
- Internationally recognized “Green Globe” status for environmental friendliness and sustainability
- Started recycling programs and many other initiatives (press release)
Things to do, places to visit
Sierra Madre Mountains – Waterfalls
Take a trip up in to the Sierra Madre Mountains to a secluded waterfall and natural swimming pool. The trip up the mountain was half the excitement as we passed through some typical mountain towns, until we reached the spot.
It’s a short walk through the jungle to the swimming spots. But make sure to check out the flora & fauna on your way. The coffee plants are an incredible sight!
Climb the waterfall and in behind, there’s a cave to explore. Only 3 of us had the guts to climb into the cave and it was so worth it. To be on the other side of a cascading waterfall is an experience you’ll never forget!
As weary travellers, the falls has a spectacular natural whirlpool generated by the current. It’s both relaxing and rejuvenating!
Catamaran & Snorkelling Trips
Depart from the marina in Santa Cruz and the boat will cruise along Huatulco’s 9 bays. You’ll see some beautiful beaches that are only accessible by boat. Stop for some snorkelling and lunch is on Maguey beach. While out on the water, you might see some sea turtles like we did!
** If you want to visit some of the deserted beaches on your own you can always pack your own lunch and hire a Panga boat to take you there.
La Crucecita
Typical of small Mexican towns, La Crucecita has a pretty town square. It has a market where you can buy souvenirs and silver at a great price in their jewelry shops. Stop by El Buen Mexcal for some Mezcal tasting – and buying! I highly recommend Crema De Mezcal in Cajeta (caramel) flavour.
3 Huatulco Hotels
Dreams Huatulco
This hotel has beautiful beachfront property, clean lines, a boutique-chic look and gorgeous sea views. Here you will receive the excellent service that the Dreams chain is known for.
Previously, Dreams was the Gala resort Huatulco. Last year they closed the hotel for 9 months to do massive renovations and re-opened as a Dreams property.
The wedding gazebo is set off to the side of the property and is beach front but not on the beach. For those who like to be pampered, Dreams has a wonderful spa with hydrotherapy area.
Barcelo Huatulco
This is a great multi-generational hotel – something for everyone! It has good food, friendly staff and a pretty beach! For those who have a more modest budget, I would definitely recommend this hotel for your destination wedding.
Las Brisas*
A cliff side hotel with 4 beaches, Las Brisas is both unusual and extravagant. Carts take you around the property to your rooms and so it’s ideal for active Beachside Brides, Grooms and guests.
*This hotel is NOT recommended for people with mobility issues.
Las Brisas has a number of different spots for weddings including the “secret beach”. This beach is away from all other public areas of the property. It also has a small beach in a little cove where you can have both your ceremony and reception!
