So many perfect Caribbean beaches for destination weddings and so little time! That’s why our destination wedding specialists conduct regular site inspections. Today, Megan reviews several St. Lucia resorts to help make your wedding planning easier.

Reduit Beach St. Lucia

Megan teased us with her St. Lucia familiarization (FAM) trip when she blogged about her experience at Jade Mountain three weeks ago. Then we found out just how committed she is as a dedicated destination wedding specialist when a broken toe failed to stop her from inspecting her scheduled list of St. Lucia resorts!

Now that she’s had a chance to recoup, here is the much-anticipated St. Lucia destination wedding resort review:

Cap Maison

After an informative 45 minute water taxi ride from Jade Mountain to Castries, we took a 15 minute cab ride to this little slice of paradise where we stayed for one night.

Refined yet unpretentious, Cap Maison is a beautiful enclave of villas with lovely grounds. The main reception area contains a small but well-equipped gym, spa and lounge with an “honour bar”. The Cliffside “Cliff@Cap” serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; and you have the option of room service. There are a couple of pools, and lovely seating areas around the grounds to view the spectacular sunsets.

The villas contain all the amenities with modern appliances, flat screen TVs and Bose i-pod docking stations. They have wonderful architectural details with archways, crown mouldings and wooden shutters, and the bedrooms have A/C. Some of the villas even have their own pools, so you have the choice to live it up here at Cap Maison!

This would be a perfect location for a wedding, with the option of a group renting out a block or two of villas and enjoying a relaxing and stress-free holiday or wedding. There is access to a small beach beside the property at Smuggler’s Cove with a beach bar.

The BodyHoliday LeSPORT

Located right on Cariblue’s Crescent beach, this resort offers an amazing variety of land and water sports. The spa facilities are wonderful, with daily treatments for both men and women included. The 42 acres of grounds are lush with an excellent gazebo for weddings located near a small water feature.

The BodyHoliday means pleasure, rejuvenation and relaxation. It delivers a memorable active beach holiday combined with your favourite sports, great food, exercise programmes and personal service. You’ll leave feeling totally rejuvenated both mentally and physically.

This resort is for anyone interested in health and well-being, old or young, fit or unfit, looking for adventure or relaxation, or just looking to rediscover yourself. There’s something here for everybody.

Cotton Bay Village

This collection of villas, suites and town-homes offers a cross between a private self-catering villa and a destination resort. Cotton Bay Village contains a very secluded and private beach, and this privacy makes it an option for families and wedding groups.

There is an on-site Deli, two restaurants (one beachfront), a spa and gym. Some villas have their own small pool, and the suites are clustered around a large pool. It is located close to an 18 hole golf course.

You can be pampered; choosing to have a private butler or treat your accommodation as a private holiday residence. Your choice! It’s informal but stylish with no airs and graces.

It’s the kind of place where the celebrities who holiday here are never bothered and where the kids have their own special meeting place – no adults allowed!

Bay Gardens Beach Resort

The Bay Gardens Beach Resort and Spa sits on one of St. Lucia’s scenic beaches and in addition to the magnificent settings at the resort, guests have the additional privilege of an incomparably beautiful 2-mile beach vista allowing access to the aquatic delights which include swimming, water sports, dive shop and a whole lot more.

Located on Reduit Beach in the heart of the shops bars and restaurants of lively Rodney Bay. Onsite there are two pools, a restaurant, bar and a lounge. The suite category have kitchenettes and separate living rooms.

The location of this property makes it a favourite, both for the beach and the location to Rodney Bay, where all of the action is.

East Winds

East Winds Inn is a true Caribbean paradise. One of the oldest and most established resorts in St.Lucia, East Winds Inn is set amongst 12 acres of lush tropical gardens bordered by the golden beachfront of one of the most pristine bays of St. Lucia.

Located on La Brellotte Bay, this resort offers 30 cottage-style rooms and has the feel of a Muskoka resort, but it’s all inclusive. There is an outside sink on the terrace, a nice touch. The original cottages do not have air conditioning and there is a small pool on-site with an “honour bar”.

East Winds is a lovely spot with an arrangement with nearby Windjammer Resort to use motorized water sports for a nominal fee.

Rendezvous

The 7 acres of grounds are lush at this all-inclusive resort and contains three bars, two pools and several dining options. The spa area now offers a rockery garden pool with a lazy river, and water-waiter service. There are great views from the restaurant adjacent to Malabar beach. The beach front “cottages” are a nice option.

Rendezvous provides a personalized, intimate holiday experience for the more discerning couples who want to spend quality time together. It is a discrete and elegant, all-inclusive hotel for couples only.

If you like music blaring on the beach all day; if you like being prodded into doing what the staff thinks is holiday-camp fun and games, Rendezvous is not for you. It is a truly gentle, tranquil escape from all that jars you and separates you in the real world. No phones, no televisions.

Coconut Bay Beach Resort and Spa

Casually Caribbean, this former Club Med property is divided into two sections: the Harmony for adults-only and the family-friendly Splash. It is literally around the corner from the airport, thus avoiding a lengthy drive on some harrowing roads!

The Coconut Bay Beach Resort is currently making some improvements, and the current dining options include Coconut Walk, Bites Beach Grill, and two a la carte restaurants Silk and Bellagio. The resort is best described as “rustic Caribbean,” but it does boast an excellent wedding location, with an adjoining area for reception and/or dinners.

That’s it for St. Lucia destination resorts – for now. Stay tuned for more upcoming reviews on Caribbean and Mexico destinations and their destination wedding resorts!

Karisma is one of our favourite destination wedding properties in Mexico and now Nikki, one of our Cyber Maids of Honour, knows why. She just came back from her very first familiarization `Fam’ trip to perform a site inspection of Karisma’s Azul and El Dorado resorts in the Mayan Riviera.

Being a new agent, I was a little nervous about attending my first Fam trip at Karisma properties. I didn’t know what to expect except for the great things I heard at work about these hotels. Before leaving, I researched each property so I’d know a little more. However, once I arrived I realized no one, pictures or descriptions, could have prepared me for the beauty!

Each Karisma property has its own unique and special quality about it. These hotels are Gourmet Inclusive, from the food to the incredible service and this is all included at no extra cost to the guests.

I have been to resorts all over Mexico, Dominican and Cuba but this is the first time I was in complete awe of the entire appeal of this chain and what is has to offer clients. Although this is a five star chain, they have something to offer for anyone, in any age category. You can go there with your loved one for a romantic getaway or go away with the family and stay in one of the many family suites the Azul properties have to offer.

Just a few of the amenities and Gourmet Inclusive that each property has to offer are:

Personalized check in, no waiting in line and a glass of champagne is awaiting your arrival.

Beautifully decorated Jacuzzi’s in all suites.

Spa services.

Sky massages, massages over the ocean in one of the “Sky” beds.

Full menu 24 hour room service.

Turn down service.Aromatherapy menus.

Pillow menus.

Personal concierge services.

All restaurants are “A la Carte” – no buffets and no reservations.

All of this and more is offered at each hotel and is catered to whatever suits you and your individual needs.

EL DORADO PROPERTIES (Adults only)

EL DORADO SEASIDE

This is the hotel that I stayed in while on my Fam trip and I had an entire day to look around the hotel to become familiar with it before the other agents got here.

When I first arrived, I was expecting a huge lobby with a front desk to check me in. But to my surprise, it was a small but welcoming entrance where I was greeted with my glass of champagne and then they checked me in personally at a small desk with my personal concierge. It was different than anything I was used to but it made it a very personal and somewhat romantic welcoming.

My room was nothing like I had stayed in before. The basic rooms are all suites, and where I stayed, it was anything but basic! It had a 4 post canopy bed, a flat screen TV, double sinks for him and her, a large stand up shower, and my favourite, the Jacuzzi tub with curtains all around it. I loved it!

There are 282 suites at this hotel each with a Jacuzzi tub, marble or Mexican tiles, safety deposit boxes, and every suite has a terrace or balcony. The swim up suites were my favourite, I only hope to be able to stay in one someday! Each one has a lazy river that is right outside your hotel room on your balcony. Another first for me!

The property itself is located along a white sandy beach that has a coral reef directly in front of it. The Karisma resorts are going “green” and the reef is protected so no guests are able to swim directly in the coral to destroy it.

There were a few weddings on property while I was there, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to see them. The wedding locations are set on the beach with a beautiful gazebo, set up with whatever colour design you like with as many of your closest family and friends as you like. This hotel caters to couples who want to go away for a romantic vacation or just to get away from it all.

By the way, the El Dorado Seaside has also been awarded by Forbes Magazine as one of the top ten romantic hotels in the world. After my visit, I’m not surprised!

EL DORADO MAROMA

This beachfront boutique hotel is situated on Maroma beach and has been voted one of the best beaches in the world. When I walked into this hotel I didn’t quite know what to think. This quaint tiny hotel has just 72 suites and with the hotel being 94% full, you could hardly tell anyone was there!

Walking around this property and feeling all it has to offer, you quickly fall in love with it. The resort is split into 2 sections. One section is the beachfront suites and the other section is the infinity pool Jacuzzi suites. All suites are ocean view!

They have the “Aguas del Amor” (outdoor showers) that you and your loved one can enjoy and shower together under the stars. The quietness and calmness of this hotel is something that I would recommend to those who want a nice romantic vacation like no other, or those that are looking to travel for their anniversary to rekindle that old magic.

It is the perfect location to get married or to renew your vows, the beach has the softest sand I have ever felt in my life, and the marina next door just adds to the perfect appeal of this hidden gem.

EL DORADO ROYAL

This is the largest of the El Dorado resorts. The resort has 644 suites in 10 categories, even though that seems like a lot it’s set up so you don’t even notice all the people.

This hotel has many services and amenities that the others don’t. For weddings, they have a beachfront wedding chapel; it’s beautiful and perfect for those who wish to have a catholic wedding. They have Casita suites, all with oceanfront views and outdoor showers, high ceilings, full bath and shower, ocean view Jacuzzi and balconies with an exterior double bed!

A couple of the other highlights is the Fuentes restaurant and the Martini bar. Fuentes is an open-concept restaurant with 2 big screen TVs situated above the kitchen where you can watch the chef cook and prepare your dinner live! The Martini bar is classy and elegant and has over 30 different types of vodka to choose from.

The wedding locations at this hotel are just as romantic and beautiful as the others. I recommend any of the El Dorado properties to those who want a true romantic experience for their special day.

One of the most surprising aspects of these properties is how “green” they really are. At the front of the El Dorado Royal they have their very own greenhouse. This greenhouse supplies all the Karisma hotels with fresh vegetables and herbs that they use in all of their restaurants!

Some of the crops are tomatoes, cucumbers, green and yellow peppers, cilantro, basil and spinach. Depending on the time of year they can produce 8 to 16 gallons of crops per month for the hotels!

AZUL PROPERTIES (family hotels)

All Azul properties include:

Personal concierge service.

All “A la carte” restaurants, no reservations required.

Gourmet baby food and kids menus.

Unique baby products upon request, such as: cribs, high chairs, baby milk heaters, strollers, baby bathrobes and towels, and refrigerators for medicine and milk.

Suites to suit all guests’ needs.

Beautiful beaches.

Exquisite wedding locations.

AZUL BEACH

This hotel is situated on the sands of the Bahia Petempich. It is also a boutique property that only has 98 rooms and an excellent choice for those who have a family or for those who are getting married that have young children attending the wedding.

For instance, the children are greeted with a welcome drink of a chocolate milkshake and a kinder egg!

The hotel has 2 room categories, superior and deluxe, and there are no Jacuzzi’s at this resort. All rooms are beachfront and are just steps away from the Bahia Petempich. This property is personable and a great way to introduce your young ones to the vacation process with the club “Azulitos” that caters to all kids and their needs at any age.

The hotel also has a unique Tequilla lounge with over 40 different types of tequila (for those nights without the young ones). They have culinary activities for all to enjoy such as a picnic, fish market and a beach barbeque.

I recommend this resort to those who want a nice quiet vacation with their children but also want to have a relaxing vacation with their partner.

AZUL SENSATORI

The moment I stepped into the lobby of this hotel I knew it was something special – I was blown away by the design and appeal! This hotel is designed by the suites they offer, the cuisine and the beautiful views.

There are 13 room categories at this property, including luxury Jacuzzi suites with rainforest shower heads. The spa is directly above the lobby area and is 10,000 sq ft, it is one of the most beautiful spas I have ever seen – the pedicure and manicure stations alone are unlike anything else!

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this hotel is the kids and teen clubs:

Azulito club (6mth – 5 yr)

Sponsored by fisher price

Themed play groups

Beach story time

Nap time beds

Kids club (4- 12 yr)

Daily activities

Movie theatre in club

Gymnastic equipment

Rock climbing

Air hockey table

Spash park playground

Teen club

Rock climbing

Billards, air hockey

Arcade room

Dance club

Internet centre

Play station, X box

The hotel has 438 suites that are located in 4 story buildings. There is an adult-only section, as well as, the family section which has suites that can have up to 3 children and 2 adults with connecting rooms!

The restaurants are so unique, that they even have a “molecular” dining experience at Le Chique, as well as a frozen tequila bar!

The most fascinating part of the Azul Sensorati has to be the “Sky Wedding” experience. Situated on the roof of the hotel, there is a beautiful gazebo overlooking the ocean as you say your vows. This is the perfect place to say “I Do” on your perfect day.

For those who may be scared of heights, they have another location located on the beach right at the ocean where you and your loved one can say “I Do” at sunrise or sunset on this stunning beach.

WHAT KARISMA HAS TO OFFER FOR WEDDINGS

Affordable wedding packages catered to any couple’s needs.

Dedicated wedding coordinators at each property.

Availability to perform catholic ceremonies.

A variety of wedding locations.

Variety of private event areas for dinners, cocktails parties and receptions.

Variety of colour schemes, flowers, décor.

Beautiful beachfront gazebos.

I highly recommend the Karisma properties to anyone, couples, families, newlyweds or those who are getting married it is an experience that you will never forget and one that you will cherish forever!

Normally our Testimonial Tuesday posts are written after the trip. However, Megan (our Head Cyber Maid of Honour) called us yesterday from St. Lucia gushing over Jade Mountain and couldn’t wait to blog about it! Here’s an initial hotel review based on what I could catch of her breathless story (and what my pen could capture on my drool-soaked paper).

As we mentioned in our St. Lucia teaser post, I was excited to be travelling to the Caribbean to review the St. Lucia luxury resorts featured on last season’s The Bachelor. When we arrived, we got a BIG surprise…

We were already giddy about staying at the luscious, 600-acre Caribbean beach resort, Anse Chastanet. But imagine our unadulterated glee when we were told that we’d been upgraded to a suite (they call them `sanctuaries’ – and for good reason, as you’ll find out soon enough) in the mountain resort, Jade Mountain!

A Rare Architectural Delight

This resort is like no other we’ve ever experienced in all our globe-trotting.

Jade Mountain is built into Mount Chastanet, rising above its sister resort, Anse Chastanet. As you can guess, we’ve got a bird’s eye-view of St. Lucia’s tropical World Heritage Site highlighted with the majestic Piton mountains and the crystalline-blue Caribbean Sea.

The resort, made of individual bridges and rugged stone-faced pillars, was designed by the architect-owner, Nick Troubetzkoy, who obviously has an appreciation for nature…

Otherworldly Accommodations

The entire Jade Mountain resort, including each suite, is an open-concept design where it actually feels like you’re living IN and above the lush tropical island.

Our room, for instance, has three walls and the fourth is what other resorts would call a `balcony’ which includes our ensuite infinity pool.

Made from boldly-coloured Italian glass tile and about 3o feet wide, the water cascades over the side so it appears as if our room has its own private waterfall!

Elaborate Yet Humble Service

The `concierges’ are aptly named, `major domos,’ a 16th century Spanish-Italian word meaning, “in charge of the household.” Considering celebrities like Oprah have used Jade Mountain’s sanctuaries to unplug from their hectic lives, the service is startlingly unpretentious. It’s so genuine it actually feels like home!

Unusual & Exquisite Natural Wonders

And finally (at least until the follow-up review post), we experienced the most stupefying, rare natural wonder EVER here at Jade Mountain!

Did you know there are rainbows you can see at night? Also known as moonbows or lunar rainbows, they’re too light for our eyes to pick up the colour and only appear during a full moon and scattered showers.

Yes, we know, it’s hard to believe but we can vouch that they are in fact a very real phenomenon because we saw one on Sunday night as we were heading for dinner!

What’s Up for Today

Unfortunately (or fortunately – depending on how you look at it), this is a work trip and business comes first. So Megan, being the dedicated destination wedding specialist she is, pulled herself away from her lavish Jade Mountain sanctuary early this morning to get started on her very full itinerary.

Just today, she’ll be `familiarizing’ (this trip is called a `fam’ trip) herself with the following hotels:

Body Holiday by Le Sport

Rendezvous

Bay Gardens

Windjammer Landing

If you liked this post, stay tuned for more on Jade Mountain and other St. Lucia resorts in the weeks following Megan’s return! And if you can’t wait until then, check out Jade Mountain’s video.

Dreaming of the ideal beach for a destination wedding? The white sandy beaches, gently swaying palm trees and balmy climate of the Dominican Republic might what you’re looking for! In today’s post our Cyber Maid of Honour, Ashley, completes her intensive Punta Cana hotel review for destination weddings.

Back in May, Ashley reported on the main attraction of her FAM trip: the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana. She then shared with us a few of the other hotels that impressed her while on her 16-hotel Punta Cana jaunt in the blog post, 3 More Punta Cana Resorts Reviewed.

Here are the remaining Punta Cana resorts Ashley saw and thought would be ideal locations for destination weddings:

Dreams wedding gazebo

Dreams Punta Cana

It was love at the main gates! When we drove up to the entrance, I was in awe of this hotel.

Set at the top of an uphill drive, the appearance of Dreams Punta Cana makes you feel like you are driving up to a palace to start a royal holiday. Its open-air, marble and gold-coloured lobby really set the tone for the gorgeous facilities that follow.

The hotel is long and sprawling with one of the largest pools in Dominican Republic. The beach at Dreams Punta Cana is not the same as the white sand beaches in the Bavaro area but more of a “brown sugar” golden sand. It is a bit windy as well due to the location of the hotel which can cause the water to be a bit rough at times, but for me, being a HUGE Pacific Mexico fan, I think that was one of the great features of this hotel – a little Vallarta in Punta Cana!

As for weddings at Dreams, there are definitely some great locations around the resort (including a beautiful staircase coming down from the main lobby) that will cover intimate couple shots to fun group shots.

Iberostar Complex

Iberostar Grand Bavaro pool

We started our tour of the Iberostar Complex at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro, the newest and highest star rating (5 stars!) of the four resorts. One word sums it up – Gorgeous! One of the great things about the Iberostar chain is that they strive for the “Wow factor” in all their hotels and they truly deliver this.

We started our tour of the property by visiting one of the ocean-view rooms. With a spectacular visual of the entire property and turquoise waters, the room was fabulous. Tastefully decorated in neutral tones, one feels completely at home at this resort.

My favourite feature at the Iberostar Grand was the night club – instead of being your typical club, it was in the Pirate Ship in the pool! Guests staying at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro have access to all hotels in the complex.

From the Grand, we took a walk along the long pathway between the other 3 properties. Next to the Grand is the Iberostar Bavaro. We were able to meet with the Wedding Team briefly while they were rapidly setting up for a sunset beach wedding (unfortunately we didn’t get to see the wedding).

The beach location for weddings here at the Iberostar Bavaro is appealing as it’s situated at the side of the resort and fairly private compared to other hotel beach wedding locations. Guests staying at the Iberostar Bavaro have access to all hotels in the complex except for the Iberostar Grand Bavaro.

We ended the tour off at the Iberostar Dominicana and Iberostar Punta Cana. These two hotels are interchangeable, however, staying at either one means you do not have access to the Iberostar Grand Bavaro or the Iberostar Bavaro.

Overall, a destination wedding at Dreams Punta Cana or either one of Iberstar’s Bavaro hotels will provide a touch of luxury for you, your guests and wedding photos. From what I’ve seen at these Punta Cana resorts, the Dominican Republic offers value and beauty no matter what your budget demands.

A few weeks ago Ashley reviewed Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana and revealed that she actually visited 15 resorts in the area during her stay. This week she reviews 3 more Punta Cana resorts for all those interested in a Dominican Republic destination wedding.

These reviews are a treat to write because I get to experience the visit all over again! Here’s are my reviews for the Melia Caribe/Tropical, Paradisus Palma Real and Paradisus Punta Cana:

Melia Caribe Tropical

This all-inclusive beach and golf resort is one of the best Punta Cana hotels for family fun. There’s a world-class golf course nearby and a casino! If you have kids in your destination wedding, they’ll love The Flintstones themed activities and facilities.

Laura, the delightful and friendly wedding coordinator for this hotel, gave us a scenic tour of the property and we scouted out several ideal locations for gorgeous wedding photos! A definite plus in our books.

As we walked around, she reviewed for us the many different options available for weddings at the Melia Caribe/Tropical.

The first order of business was the most important: wedding ceremony locations.

Gazebo. The gazebo makes for the perfect intimate setting due to the location. It’s in a low traffic area so the couple and their guests will have minimal onlookers for their big moment.

Beach Gazebo. The beach gazebo is a bit smaller than the regular gazebo, however, there is a great view of the ocean to set a great backdrop for your wedding pictures.

Dining Facilities
The Melia Caribe/Tropical has over a dozen restaurants to choose from for a wide variety of international dining experiences. We were shown the banquet halls that couples can use to host their dinner and reception. There were different options depending on the size of the group. Two of the halls also have a patio outside so the guests have the option to step outside for some fresh air!

Paradisus Palma Real

This hotel had definite WOW factor. If you’re looking for posh and elegance, this is your hotel! From the lobby, you have a great view of the center of the resort and the turquoise ocean in the distance. And the pool areas are lined with exotic Bali beds!

The Paradisus Palma Real has many different options to cater to wedding groups of all sizes. Their private club area, `GABi Beach’, offers an exclusive location to celebrate your wedding (at an additional charge).

One of the things I loved about this resort was the beach location for the ceremony. Although it’s not 100% private, there is a large area that is blocked off so the couple and their guests will have a large area of the beach just for them to celebrate the couples new life together.

The Paradisus Palma Real is a gorgeous property that would not only be great a setting for a destination wedding but also a romantic honeymoon or anniversary trip.

Paradisus Punta Cana

This all-inclusive hotel was one of my favourites for many reasons but especially for the spacious, beautiful architecture and natural décor where they’ve brought the out-side indoors!

They offer tennis, championship golf, an array of gorgeous pools, every non-motorized water sport imaginable, a casino, an exquisite full-service spa and health club and a thrilling collection of unique island activities.

As for the wedding specifics, we met with the wedding coordinator who started our tour of the property with the indoor banquet facilities and rain options available at the hotel.

We were then shown the Reserve section of the hotel. The Reserve rooms were spectacular. They offered a great setting for families traveling with young children as well as couples who want a bit of extra pampering on their holiday.

The Paradisus Punta Cana also offers the Royal Service Adults only section. After leaving the Reserve section we got a full tour of the property including restaurants, bars, the spa and beach gazebo. The new YHI Spa was amazing, offering many different treatments to pamper the bride (and her girls!) before the big day!

There is a private pool area that all guests of the hotel have access to, too; however not everyone knows about! If you want a quiet pool all to yourselves, make sure you swing by the spa.

I hope you enjoyed my Punta Cana hotel reviews. Is there anything I missed that you would like to hear more of? Let me know below in the comment section. And please stay tuned for more!

Today’s testimonial post was written by one of our Cyber Maids of Honour, Ashley. Not only was it her first visit to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, it was also her first official business trip as a Weddings By Oceans’ destination wedding specialist!

Last week I had the opportunity to visit Punta Cana and stay at the Majestic Colonial. I can definitely see why this hotel is a number one choice for Punta Cana weddings. From the moment we stepped out of the cab I was wowed!

The Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana

We were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff at the reception who completed our check-in in record time!

My husband and I were in a Majestic Suite and we felt completely at home for our entire stay. We had a great view of the spectacular pool and off in the distance you could catch a glimpse of the beautiful turquoise waters.

The hotel was at 100% occupancy during our stay, but honestly it did not feel like it. There were always available lounge chairs by the pool or on the beach and we never had to wait for a table for any meals.

As far as food is concerned, we ate well while away. There were many options at every meal to keep even fussy eaters like myself full and satisfied. My favourite restaurant was the Mexican restaurant as it reminded me of my mother-in-law’s cooking in Mexico.

Destination weddings at the Majestic Colonial

During our stay, we witnessed several weddings including two Weddings By Oceans’ couples: Latoya & Andre and Jessica & Jermaine. The gazebo provides a semi-private area for a more intimate wedding where the beach location, although nice, did have the potential to draw a crowd of curious watchers.

The team in the hotel weddings department were great during all the ceremonies being held over the week. They were busy but always seemed to be smiling and ready to take on the next wedding.

The Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana

We were also given access to the Majestic Elegance for the duration of our stay. I was able to try the restaurants and facilities for the week – a definite perk to being a destination weddings specialist. My favourite restaurant at the Majestic Elegance was the Japanese Tapanyaki restaurant.

Review conclusion

Overall I loved the Majestic Colonial & Majestic Elegance. I would recommend them both not only for weddings but for honeymooners as well as a nice getaway for couples and families.

Although we were in a tropical paradise, it wasn’t all play and no work. Megan and I spent a few days traveling around Punta Cana to visit other hotels and check out their wedding locations. Over the course of our trip we saw 15 additional hotels:

Melia Caribe

Melia Tropical

Paradisus Palma Real

Grand Palladium

Occidental Grand Flamenco

Ocean Blue

Ocean Sand

Iberostar Grand Bavaro

Iberostar Bavaro

Iberostar Punta Cana

Iberostar Dominicana

Dreams Punta Cana

Sirenis Cocotal

Excellence Punta Cana

Paradisus Punta Cana

Stay tuned for reviews of these hotels in upcoming posts!

If you liked Ashley’s testimonial you think the Majestic Colonial or Elegance might be right for your Dominican Republic destination wedding, contact Ashley or another Cyber Maid of Honour over at Weddings By Oceans to start planning your romantic wedding away!

Editor’s Note: If you’ve dreamed of a Caribbean destination wedding, what better way to picture yourself there than through a romantic hit TV show? Megan catches us up from our last Testimonial Tuesday‘s post, The Bachelor, St. Lucia & Your Destination Wedding.

On Monday, March 1, the world watched the romance continue as Jake and his two remaining bachelorettes explored more of the lush island of Saint Lucia on the season finale of Season 14 of The Bachelor.

While some of us here at Weddings By Oceans may not be in favour of Jake’s choice of bachelorette, we unanimously agree and enthusiastically respond, “I do!” when asked, “Who loves Saint Lucia?”

Awarded “World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination” for the past several years by the World Travel Awards, Saint Lucia was the ideal setting for the season finale. We watched the two couples discover new romance by basking under the Caribbean sun, sailing into a champagne sunset and cuddling beneath the starry sky.

“Saint Lucia is known for its natural beauty and diverse attractions, making it perfect for couples looking to honeymoon, get married or simply getaway,” said Louis Lewis, Director of Tourism for Saint Lucia. “It gives Saint Lucians great joy to have a show about romance, love and happiness featured on our island.”

Jake’s Journey for Love

Arc De Ciel, a wonderful five-bedroom resort between the Pitons, is where the final two bachelorettes met Jake’s family. The Pitons, located in the picturesque southwest of the island, are the iconic symbol of Saint Lucia and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Eastern Caribbean.

Jake and Tenley sailed the clear, warm waters of Saint Lucia’s west coast on Kingdom Yachts, while taking in the white sand beaches lined with gently swaying palms and the dramatic volcanic topography.

After their sail, they spent a night in a stunning, new luxury villa nestled within in the embrace of the island’s World-Heritage listed Pitons at The Jalousie Plantation resort. Established on more than 100 acres of magnificent rainforest, The Jalousie Plantation is without question set in one of the most spectacular and romantic locations in the world – the Valley of the Pitons.

Jake and Vienna explored the Sulphur Springs, which is situated at one of the world’s few drive-in volcanoes near the town of Soufrière. The couple ended their romantic date by checking into a suite at Anse Chastanet, a 600-acre estate with two beaches.

The Anise Chastanet

Tropical weather, welcoming accommodations and unexpected adventures await the couple taking this trip.

Weddings By Oceans has sent several groups to this property for destination weddings. The personalized service and attention to detail can only be surpassed by the friendliness of the staff and Karon, the wedding coordinator and wife of hotel-owner, Nick Troubetzkoy.

For those with a larger budget, we highly recommend this property.

Who Will He Choose at Jade Mountain?

After the final dates, Jake prepared to make one of the most difficult choices of his life while at what is easily one of the most impressive properties we know – Jade Mountain; a luxury resort built on the side of a mountain, rising majestically above the beachfront resort of Anse Chastanet.

This award-winning resort is a cornucopia of organic architecture, celebrating the island’s stunning scenic beauty, and offers one of the world’s most mesmerizing experiences. With the fourth wall entirely absent, Jade Mountain’s sanctuaries are stage-like settings where one can embrace the full glory of Saint Lucia’s Pitons, and of course, the Caribbean Sea.

Visit www.stlucianow.com for more information about the legendary island nation of Saint Lucia. If you’re interested in Jade Mountatin or Anse Chastenet for your destination wedding, contact us for 2011 rates!

About Saint Lucia
One of the Windward Islands of the West Indies’ Lesser Antilles, Saint Lucia (pronounced Saint LOO-sha) is nestled halfway down the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The “Helen of the West Indies,” Saint Lucia is known for its natural beauty and diverse attractions, including the signature Piton Mountains – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a tropical rainforest and one of the world’s few drive-in volcanoes. Culturally rich offerings include the bustling marketplace in the capital of Castries, quaint fishing villages along the coastline, and the annual Saint Lucia Jazz festival. Saint Lucia’s wide range of accommodations includes world-class five-star resorts, all-inclusive resorts, intimate inns and value-oriented properties.

Are you dreaming of a destination wedding in St. Lucia after seeing The Bachelor? We can get you there!

Recognized as one of the most romantic places on the planet, the legendary island of Saint Lucia serves as the ideal setting for the final dates of “The Bachelor: On The Wings of Love.”

From cruising the coastal waters to exploring the lush landscapes, Saint Lucia offers Bachelor Jake Pavelka and the three remaining bachelorettes the tropical escape of a lifetime.

What happened last night?

Jake whisks his potential future wife away to Saint Lucia for exciting daytime excursions and unforgettable overnight memories. Each date is filled with emotion and anticipation as Jake learns what his future might be like with each potential mate. At the end of each evening, the Bachelor presents each bachelorette with an invitation to spend the night in a special fantasy suite at Cap Maison, an elegant luxury resort and spa located in the north of Saint Lucia.

Jake and Tenley Explore Historical Properties on Island

For his date with Tenley, the couple take a helicopter ride over the lush tropical scenery of Saint Lucia to view the beauty of the iconic Piton Mountains. After landing at the Balenbouche Estate, the couple enjoy an idyllic picnic with stunning views. Offering complete tranquility and authenticity, The Balenbouche Estate is a historic Caribbean plantation guesthouse located in the southern town of Soufrière.

The two continue to relish their alone time with an intimate dinner at The BodyHoliday LeSPORT, a world renown spa resort located on the beach. Specializing in rejuvenation and relaxation, LeSPORT provides an award-winning dining experience with local and organic fare to help unwind after an exhilarating day.

Jake and Gia Indulge in the Local Island Flavors

Adventure is the focus of the second outing where Jake takes Gia on a fishing trip to Gros Islet. Situated on the cusp of the Rodney Bay Marina, Gros Islet is a colorful fishing village full of island life. The couple delight in the possibility of catching a variety of indigenous sea life like blue marlin, king fish and yellow fin tuna, as they bask under the hot Caribbean sun.

The boating excursion is followed by a casual jaunt through the markets where local vendors offer tourists a variety of handmade memorabilia, spices and foods. After the sights and sounds of the bustling bazaar, Jake and his bachelorette trek to Pigeon Island for a private beach picnic. A 40-acre islet connected to Saint Lucia’s west coast, Pigeon Island is a beautiful nature park which reflects a thousand years of history.

Jake and Vienna Experience Sailing the Caribbean Sea

After the adrenaline rush of fishing, Jake and Vienna are able to unwind with a chartered ride on the Brig Unicorn. “The Brig,” as she is affectionately called, is instantly recognizable as one of the yachts used in such blockbuster movies as Pirates of the Caribbean and Roots.

Photo courtesy of Roy, sourced from Picasa web photos.

Aboard the vessel, visitors have the chance to tour the fishing villages of Anse la Raye and Canaries before reaching the town of Soufrière to see the Diamond waterfalls and Sulphur Springs.

Although Jake is having a spectacular time, he is apprehensive as he realizes he has to eliminate one of the women he has fallen for at the rose ceremony the next night. The natural splendor of Saint Lucia makes Jake’s decision even harder as he must say goodbye to one bachelorette and send her home without his heart. Jake and his bachelorettes settle in at either Cap Maison or LeSPORT where they are able to share their true feelings in a private retreat.

Rose Ceremony: Passionate Decisions at Private Luxury Property

Set atop a private ocean-front bluff with panoramic sunset views, Cap Maison is the ideal setting for the traditional rose ceremony. The award-winning property is located in Saint Lucia’s Cap Estate, a secluded section running along Smugglers Cove beach and a preferred choice for discerning guests. The tranquil estate set the stage for a heighted sense of emotion as Jake endured the painstaking process of selecting his final two bachelorettes.

Why St. Lucia for Your Caribbean Destination Wedding?

Saint Lucia is known for its natural beauty and diverse attractions, including the signature Piton Mountains – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a tropical rainforest and one of the world’s few drive-in volcanoes. Culturally rich offerings include the bustling marketplace in the capital of Castries, quaint fishing villages along the coastline and the annual Saint Lucia Jazz festival.

Puerto Vallarta is located in the state of Jalisco on the west coast of Mexico. It is the land of tequila and mariachis. It offers world famous fishing, antique browsing, golfing, dining and nightlife.

And just 15 minutes from downtown is Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa where I had the pleasure of staying for 7 nights from January 25th to Feb 1st with my husband Laurie.

With the Sierra Madre mountains as a backdrop to the golden sand beach, this property sits in a private and secluded cove on one of the 40 beautiful beaches along Banderas Bay.

From the moment we were greeted at our arrival, we were impressed by the surroundings. We were located in the Preferred Tower in a Junior suite offering ocean views, private terrace (698 sq. ft.), located on the 2nd floor adjacent to the Sunset Grill Restaturant.

In addition to the breathtaking views, the Preferred Tower offers:

Private Preferred Lounge

Concierge service

Daily continental breakfast service in the lounge

Afternoon hot and cold hors d’œuvres, desserts & liquors in the lounge

Complimentary newspaper in room every day (English)

Free computer access in room and Preferred Lounge

Upgraded mini bar service and bath amenities

Restaurants

No reservations required! No line ups, no hassels. Ahhh…

The food in each of the 5 restaurants exceeded our expectations. We particularly enjoyed Mexican breakfast (chilaquiles), at the World Cafe but you must ask for these to be specially made and the cevice and mahi mahi at the Sunset Grill in the late afternoon with a bottle of wine.

The hotel had a Mexican Night with food stations set up on the pool deck, and we were serenaded by Mariachis while browsing the vendors stalls set up on the perimiter. It was a great evening. We also enjoyed the Managers Cocktail Party and the Fire Show. Most other nights were spent sippin’ really good house wine on our terrace watching the moon reflecting off the ocean.

The Portofino offers a variety of Italian entrees. Laurie recommends the lamb. I couldn’t decide what to have from the extensive menu so requested a special pasta be made to order – which was delicious. It is also the same pasta I usually order at home – how lazy can I get on holiday???

Room service

Always quick and arrived hot (if hot food was ordered), which was a lovely surprise!

Tip: Check out the “moonset” at about 5:00 a.m. and enjoy some room service and watch this amazing wonder of nature.

Activities

While the resort offers many activites, to be honest we spent most of our time just lazing on the beach or the terrace with a cool drink and a great book. The waves were quite strong during the week, and the red flags were out, but it was amazing to watch as the waves crashed the shoreline!

Tip: Brides and Grooms, be sure to ask me about a top secret location on the property to get away from it all during your week!!!

Another Tip: Bring binoculars. There is a pretty good chance you will see dolphins not far out from shore. We were also fortunate to be travelling at a time when the whales are in Banderas Bay, and a couple of them were spotted during the week from our balcony.

We were hoping to see the baby Caray Green Sea Turtles released, but the eggs (protected by fencing in the cove), had not hatched yet.

Good Bye Dreams…Hello Hotel Hortencia

After 7 days at Dreams we moved downtown to the Romantic Zone where we checked in to the mexican owned and family run Hotel Hortencia for 3 days.

This is a typical budget hotel located right in the heart of it all. It is a great location for walking the historical town of Puerto Vallarta and is just blocks from the beach, minutes to Rio Cuale and a brisk hike up the hill to Gringo Gulch, which is located behind the town church.

One of the main reasons for going downtown for a few days was so I could spend time with my old friend Katy. Katy and I were roomates in Ixapa 22 years ago and haven’t seen each other since that time. She has been living in Puerto Vallarta for years. She took us to visit Boca de Tomatlan, the Marina and golf course areas, Chicos Paradise (but it was closed), visited a new hotel/condo complex and restaurant, then out to dinner at a local seafood restaurant called El Bacalao (on Calle Badillo), owned by a Canadian woman and her husband.

On our own we walked the Malacon (boardwalk) several times. We discovered the Cultural Centre in the Rio Cuale which was interesting, and we ate delicious empanadas from the bakery on Calle Badillo, as well as great tacos al pastor at Panchos Takos, also on Calle Badillo. Dee’s Coffee was as good as any I’ve had here, with super extra foamy cappucinos! Yummy!

We wandered the cobblestone streets of town often, then one morning we climbed steep steps up to Gringo Gulch where we peeked around corners and down lanes at the villas that cling to the hillside.

Zaragoza Street is famous for it’s former residents Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton… big whoop – but the houses and area are really worth a look!

Tip: Take a spa day…

While walking from the Malacon back to the hotel one afternoon, we met RuthGarcia Osio, owner/manager of the new “Ha Spa“. She gave us her spa menu and invited us to visit if we had time. The very next day happened to be the rainiest day Puerto Vallarta has experienced in 15 years. Now that can only mean one thing – Spa Day!!!

We called Ruth and arranaged 2 – 90 minute massages, 2 facials and one manicure for less than $150US total! The spa is clean and the staff friendly. English is spoken. George was excellent, and gave me a Theraputic Massage. Anita worked on Laurie who enjoyed a Relaxing Massage.

Check them out at www.haspapv.com and don’t wait for a rainy day to visit!!!

Would I recommend Puerto Vallarta as a destination? Si!

Have you been to any of these places Megan has mentioned in her review post? We want to know your opinion of Puerto Vallarta! Please leave your comments.
